Cogress Venue

  1. Utsunomiya is located in south-central Tochigi Prefecture in the northern Kantō plains and is approximately 100km north of Tokyo. It can be reached in less than an hour via Shinkansen from Tokyo Station. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Utsunomiya served as an important hub in the northern Kanto area. Today, Utsunomiya City has an estimated population of 518,200 and is the 10th most populated city in the Kanto region.

Utsunomiya is the commercial and industrial center of Tochigi Prefecture. It is home to Honda’s Research and Development Center, Nissan’s largest production plant, Canon’s optical manufacturing plant and various other industrial concerns in the Kiyohara Industrial Park.

Utsunomiya is located to one of Japan’s most popular destinations for Japanese and international tourists, Nikko National Park. Attractions include the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (Nikkō Tōshō-gū) and that of his grandson Iemitsu (Iemitsu-byō Taiyū-in), and the Futarasan Shrine, which dates to the year 767. There are also many famous hot-springs (onsen) in the area. The Japanese saying "Never say 'kekkou' until you've seen Nikko"—kekko meaning beautiful, magnificent or "I am satisfied"—is a reflection of the beauty and sites in Nikkō.

    Getting there
    By plane
From Narita Airport, the fastest way to reach Utsunomiya is to take the Narita Express train to Tokyo Station and transfer to the Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko, Nasuno or Tsubasa service (2 1/4 hours). From Haneda Airport, take the Keikyu Line train to Shinagawa, then the Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku line train to Tokyo Station. From there, take the Tohoku Shinkansen (about 1 3/4 hours). A cheaper trip is to continue up the Yamanote to Ueno station and change to the JR Utsunomiya commuter line (3 hours).
    Separate Airport Limousine bus services
    - each called the Marronnier - run between JR Utsunomiya Station and both Narita Airport (2 3/4 hours) and Haneda Airport (2 3/4 hours).
