The Japanese Rhinologic Society, being acknowleged as General Incorporated Association is one of the associate societies among the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan. The ultimate goal of our society is to contribute to the development of welfare for the sake of people in Japan, making efforts to promote research and improve medical practice regarding rhinology, as well as activate mutual friendship and communication among the members and extend relationships among other international societies. The predecessor of this society was founded in October 1962 with the name of the Rhinology Study Group, and it was renamed as the Japanese Rhinologic Society in 1964. In 2012, our Japanese rhinologic society was renewed as a General Incorporated Association with the new article of incorporation.
Most updated number of our society members exceeds more than 2,000 with our pride. We are now making efforts to complete various undertakings; 1) having annually general assembly and academic meeting, 2) editing Japanese Journal of Rhinology, publishing various guidelines for diagnosis and/or treatment of various diseases in rhinology field, 3) supplying educational courses, academic conferences, 4) encouraging junior and senior members with awards based on their performances 5) extending mutual friendships among nationwide societies 6) cooperation with other international societies in research and clinical science 7) making educational programs for citizens as regard rhinology.
Rhinologists are taking care of various kinds of diseases in nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses with surrounding tissues such as orbit and skull base, and those are categorized with nasal allergy, rhinosinusitis, sinonasal tumors, facial trauma, and hyposmia.
Allergic rhinitis, such as cedar pollen allergies, affecting one third of Japanese people, and eosinophilic rhinosinusitis, in addition to conventional infectious rhinosinusitis, are the most common diseases in patients consulting otorhinolaryngological hospitals.
More importantly, differential diagnosis is critical for the patients with sinonasal tumors whether it is benign or malignant, and also for the treatment of patients with malignancy, very best patient prognosis is warranted, but however, QOL of patients from cosmetic and functional aspects should be also well maintained. We also have seen many patients suffering from anosmia or nasal obstruction with respiratory dysfunction. As the patients with facial bone fracture or blow-out fracture of orbital wall have been supposed to be treated by experts of rhinology, so these patients should be treated not only from the cosmetic problem but also functional aspects such as eye movement, opening mouth, occlusion. Therefore, it is essential for the rhinology experts to have a longer and plenty of experiences in clinical practice and also for our society to enrich research activities in basic and clinical science with developing new pharmaceutical treatment methods and surgical skills with a new technology.
During the past two decades, outstandingly, recent advances in functional ESS(endoscopic sinus surgery) and surgery supporting apparatus, together with a navigation system, have been accomplished. Moreover, training system such as voxel-man simulator, computer graphic model of sinonasal cavity, and lamb head dissection system etc. have been developed to ensure the surgical skills over the ESS. On the other hand, in the research area of pathogenesis and treatment strategy, we have most recently undergone paradigm shift to “ United airway disease”. Since there is a strong link between nasal disorders and the lower airway, and the treatment of allergic rhinitis or sinusitis can contribute to the improvement of asthma and infectious lung diseases and the prevention of recurrence, nasal disorders have been paid an attention in the field of internal and pediatric medicine under the concept of “united airway disease”. Interestingly, much progress in basic and clinical research was achieved on the pathogenesis and treatment of so called eosinophilic rhinosinusitis, persistent to the conventional treatment methods and it is no exaggeration to say that Japanese researchers are leading this nice piece of immunological works so far worldwide.
In the clinical practice, sublingual immunotherapy with cedar pollen extract has been acknowledged by the ministry of health care and lectures and e-learning was made up for actual training of the clinical routines and quite understanding of much benefit and adverse events as well. In the western countries, as sublingual immunotherapy have been already utilized long enough together with subcutaneous immunotherapy, so much clinical data were accumulated. With making sure of a proper use, we are looking forward to see the prevalence of sublingual immunotherapy in patients with cedar pollinosis. As you may already know, new classification of ESS for rhinosinusitis prepared by our society was adopted by medical insurance system.
In viewing of international activities of our society, our activities have been highly evaluated around the world. We have the largest number of members in our society among associates of the International Rhinologic Society, and many clinical and basic studies have been presented in European and International Rhinologic Societies. It is striking that we have been doing much efforts to have a close contact with European rhinologic society with participating as much as membership and accordingly subscribing journal of rhinology and this action is highly evaluated. Interestingly, more than 80 Japanese participants at Amsterdam ERS and ISIAN meeting 2014 have actually shown its testimony.
The International Symposium on Infection and Allergy of the Nose (ISIAN) was founded along with the International Rhinologic Society meeting in 1976, is widely known as an international meeting in rhinology field. In 2011, the congress of 14th IRS(International Rhinologic Society) and 30th ISIAN were successfully held in Tokyo by the president elect, prof. Hiroshi Moriyama, Jikei University, This year ISIAN was acknowledged to become an international society with membership and by-law, and renamed as International Society on Inflammation and Allergy of the Nose. Further progress of IRS and ISIAN is anticipated, based on our enormous supports. We have also been actively interacting with other East Asian countries. For example, an international exchange program between Japan and Korea has been supposed to be held at the each annual meeting of the Japanese Rhinologic Society and Korean Rhinologic Society, vice versa. We have been also continuing academic support to the ARSR(Asian Research Symposium in Rhinology) as well.
Taking a look at our longest history and present situation as a General Incorporated Association, we have to make sure and extend our academic activity and as many as undertakings.
Needless to say, it is essential for the academic society to provide academic meeting for our members and publish a high quality of science journals every year. Concretely speaking, our forthcoming assignments, which I would like to mention to all of you, are internationalization of our society, activation of announcement to the members, contribution to the civilians as General Incorporated Association, appropriate description of our history, proper management of housekeeping jobs with a time-table and operating manuals.
I would be very grateful if you all members understand our situation and make every effort to cooperate with us.
We are always waiting for new members to contribute to our society, so you make a decision to get in now, thank you.
